Terms of service

The rules, in language you can actually read.

Parla holds a child's communication, behavior and progress record. These terms say what we're responsible for, what you're responsible for, and what Parla is and isn't.

Not medical advice

A documentation tool. Suggestions are drafts for humans to decide on.

Your content is yours

We claim no ownership. Export or delete it whenever you want.

You control access

Care-team roles and guest passes are yours to grant and revoke.

The agreement

These terms are the agreement between you and Parla for use of the Parla app at tryparla.app, its installable phone version, and everything in it — the communication board, the games, the parent dashboard, the clinician tools, reports and exports, guest QR passes and the store.

By creating an account or using Parla you accept these terms and the privacy policy. If you don't accept them, don't use the app. If you're accepting on behalf of a school, district or clinic, you confirm you're authorized to bind that organization.

You must be at least 18 years old to hold a Parla account. Children do not create accounts: a child using the board is using an adult's account.

Parla is not medical advice

This is the most important term in this document. Parla is a communication and documentation tool. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose anything, and nothing it shows you is a clinical opinion.

Suggested words, suggested sounds, suggested activities, coaching prompts, progress trends and AI-drafted report text are aids for you and your child's professionals to review, edit and decide on. They are not a substitute for assessment or treatment by a licensed speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physician or other qualified professional.

Never delay or change care because of something Parla showed you. If a child is in danger or needs urgent help, contact emergency services — Parla is not a monitoring service and no one at Parla is watching your logs in real time.

Your account

You're responsible for keeping your sign-in and your parent PIN secure, and for everything done through your account. The parent PIN is a child-safety barrier for a shared device, not a security control against another adult — don't rely on it to keep sensitive data from someone who has your unlocked phone.

Tell us promptly if you believe someone has gained access to your account. You can close your account at any time.

Your content stays yours

Everything you put into Parla — logs, notes, goals, board words, photos and the child's record as a whole — belongs to the family, or in a school or clinic deployment, to that organization. We claim no ownership of it.

You grant us only the limited license we need to run the service for you: to store your content, display it to the people you've given access, process it to generate the trends, suggestions and reports you request, and back it up. That license ends when you delete the content or close the account.

You confirm you have the right to upload what you upload, including photos of your child and of other people.

Care team, roles and access

You decide who joins a child's care team and what each person can see. Granting clinical access exposes health and personal-care trends to that person, and you can revoke it at any time from the Care team screen.

If you invite a professional, you're confirming you have the standing to share that child's information with them. Professionals who join a care team agree to use the information only for the care of that child and in line with their own professional and legal obligations.

A guest QR pass opens the communication board only and gives no access to any parent or clinical data. You are responsible for who you hand a pass to, and you can revoke passes at any time.

Acceptable use

Don't do any of the following:

  • Enter or share data about a child you are not the guardian of, or don't have documented consent to document.
  • Use another person's account, share credentials, or try to reach data that isn't yours — including probing our API, RLS rules or storage links.
  • Upload unlawful, abusive or harmful material, or content you have no right to upload.
  • Scrape, resell, sublicense or white-label Parla, or copy its content and clinical material into a competing product.
  • Overload, disrupt or reverse-engineer the service, or bypass usage limits and paywalls.
  • Present Parla output as a clinical assessment, diagnosis or certified evaluation.

AI features

Several features send your text to a large-language-model provider to produce your own output — check-in questions, coaching, restating a note in clinical language, and report drafts. AI output can be wrong, incomplete or oddly worded. It is a draft for a human to accept, edit or reject, and it never silently changes a child's record.

You are responsible for reviewing anything AI helped write before you send it to a school, an insurer or a clinician. Where Parla cites research, it cites real sources; where it applies a rule of our own, it says so.

Reports and exports

Reports, IEP packs and exports are generated from the data you entered, over the range you chose, and you see the full document before it leaves the app. Their accuracy depends on what you logged; we don't warrant that any export meets the requirements of a specific school district, insurer or regulator.

Once you download, print or send an export, that copy is outside the app and outside our control.

Plans, billing and the store

Some features are free and some require a paid plan. Prices are shown before you buy. Subscriptions renew automatically for the same period until you cancel, and you can cancel at any time — cancellation stops the next renewal and you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.

Payments are handled by our payment processor; Parla never sees or stores your card number. Taxes are added where required.

Physical store orders (QR pillows, tags, card packs, apparel) are shipped to the address you give at checkout. If an item arrives damaged or wrong, contact us and we'll replace it or refund it. Except where the law gives you a refund right, subscription fees already paid are non-refundable.

If we change prices, we'll tell you before the change applies to your renewal.

Schools, districts and clinics

Where an organization deploys Parla for students or clients, that organization is responsible for having the legal basis and parental consent to do so, for managing its own staff's access, and for its own record-keeping obligations. Parla acts on its instructions with respect to student data.

Organizational deployments may be covered by a separate written agreement or data processing agreement. Where that agreement conflicts with these terms, that agreement governs.

Availability and changes

We work to keep Parla available and fast, but we don't promise uninterrupted service. We may add, change or remove features. If we make a change that materially reduces a feature you rely on, we'll give reasonable notice where we can.

The board is designed to keep working on a device that has already loaded it, but you should not treat any app — including this one — as a child's only means of communication in a situation where failure would be unsafe.

Suspension and ending the agreement

You can stop using Parla and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end an account that breaks these terms, puts a child or another user at risk, or is used unlawfully — where it's reasonable to do so, we'll warn you first and give you a chance to export your data.

After an account closes, we delete its data as described in the privacy policy. Export anything you want to keep before you close it.

Disclaimer

Parla is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free, that suggestions will be right for your child, or that data will always be available.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Parla is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data, lost profits, or decisions made in reliance on the app — including clinical, educational or legal decisions.

Our total liability for any claim relating to Parla is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or 50 US dollars.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, and some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Indemnity

You agree to cover us against claims arising from your misuse of Parla, from content you upload that you had no right to upload, or from sharing a child's information with someone you had no standing to share it with. This does not apply to claims caused by our own failure.

How your data is handled

These terms cover the agreement. The privacy policy covers what we collect, who can see it, how long it's kept and what deleting really does.
